COVID-19 Update On Mumbai & Kampala Sanctuaries

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to take a toll as the Kampala Sanctuary moves into complete lockdown due to a regional surge and the Mumbai Sanctuary experiences minimal relief from the virus in India.

As the Kampala Sanctuary transitioned from the wet season to dry season, they experienced seasonal flu cases and then in early June had to shut down to ensure the safety of the participants and staff from the second wave of COVID-19. They anticipate being closed through the end of July. Three new participants were hired in June and are currently settling into community life. Education classes are focused on life skills that center around building realistic goals and checking in with accountability partners to ensure progress. Additionally, the women worked together to successfully accomplish the production of a large order of more than 450 Allure Cuffs.

The staff and participants have been able to return to the Mumbai Sanctuary two at a time to begin building up jewelry production again. However, while the region has seen signs of abatement of COVID-19, businesses and organizations remain mostly closed. The Sanctuary continues to focus on providing stress relief and self-care through community building. Education for new participants focused on addressing fears, including why they exist, acknowledgment, coping skills and how to separate their identity from it. Advanced participants worked on English verb tenses along with understanding the character strengths of humility, humor, and leadership.

Cebu Sanctuary is focused on studying connection and love language, as well as learning about the bones, heart and brain in their bodies. Other activities this past month included regular physical exercise and a Mother’s Day celebration. A participant was pleasantly surprised with a birthday celebration and expressed sincere gratitude for it. Each participant received a Bible in Cebuano for morning devotions from a Board of Director in Dalangpanan as a gift.

The Tijuana Sanctuary was proud to produce 552 pieces of jewelry in May with six participants! All the women and staff in the Sanctuary are now registered to receive their COVID-19 vaccine and look forward to receiving it soon. They are building community through reflection of self-knowledge and getting to know each other better. Additionally, the Sanctuary is working on expanding its network with institutions, churches, colleges, and organizations to grow relationships for participants.
