December Impact Report

Shifa* Graduated College!

Shifa* earned her B.A. in Sociology! After finishing her courses in the Spring, Shifa was set to take her graduation exams when COVID hit. Although the exams were postponed, she still continued to prepare. She said she is grateful for that extra time to study and she was confident she would pass.

It was challenging to study and work at the same time, so Shifa set up times when she would study. She would study on the weekends and during the 1 hour study time each morning at the Sanctuary. She would come early and meet with a staff member to ask questions and get clarifications she got confused or had questions. She is very grateful for the support of Sanctuary staff.

Right now, Shifa is deciding whether to pursue a masters degree and in the meantime is continuing to work in the Sanctuary. We know great things are in store for her future.

December Highlights

  • New Survivor Joined the Mumbai Sanctuary. Now that we are back open, we were able to interview a young women who started with us at the beginning of the month. We are very excited to welcome her into our community!

  • Launching E-Tutoring in Kampala. We are launching e-Tutoring lessons in Kampala with tutors in the USA. This program has been working in Mumbai for a few years now, and we are excited to finally launch it in Uganda.

  • New Academy Teachers in Mumbai. We welcomed Pallavi & Uma to our Academy team last month. They are adapting quickly, understanding the unique needs of the young women in our program. Change is not always easy for survivors, however the young women are warming up to them already.

  • Getting in the Holiday Spirit in Tijuana. Nothing gets you in the spirit like decorating. The ladies in our Tijuana Sanctuary worked together to decorate the Sanctuary for Christmas and did a great job!

Decorating the Tijuana Sanctuary

We need your help more than ever, understanding we will continue to operate remotely for the foreseeable future because of the COVID-19 crisis. Would you join us and be a part of the solution to empower young women trying to rebuild their lives after the horrors of human trafficking.

At the beginning of this year, I had lost hope because I thought I would not get my salary every month and my kids would miss food, clothing and shelter. However, because of your compassion and love, I was able to get paid my full salary that catered for my needs.
